Becoming a Registered Charity – Is It Worth All the Effort?
Starting a new not-for-profit or charity in Australia can be a minefield! There are so many things to think about: fundraising, grant applications, staffing/volunteers, training, risk management, policy-making, insurance, finances, and that’s all before you even start doing anything to actually help anyone!
And if that wasn’t challenging enough the government have a bunch of regulations and governance requirements that add extra work & complexities for charities to navigate through as well as a governing body in the ACNC to ensure that charities are doing the right thing. It’s enough to make you wonder whether it’s worth the effort of becoming a registered charity!
Despite what that daunting feeling in your stomach might be suggesting, the reward can be worth the effort. And here is why:
Firstly, becoming a registered charity gives you increased credibility and trust, especially among those who are unfamiliar with your charity (including potential donors).
Secondly, it gives you the opportunity to then apply for DGR status, which means your donations will be tax-deductible.
Thirdly, going through the registration process helps your charity to clearly define who you are & what you are about.
Finally, the registration process helps your charity set up good structures & policies that will position you to act responsibly and in the best interests of your team and those you are seeking to make a difference for.
So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to get started!
